What is Online Cross Stitch Pattern Maker?
Cross Stitch Pattern Maker makes a counted cross stitch chart from your own photo: a pet, a portrait, a house or a favourite place. Each stitch is matched to one of 454 DMC six-strand floss colours, every colour gets its own symbol, and you get the stitch count, how many skeins to buy, and how big the piece will be on your fabric.

A Chart You Can Stitch From
The PDF starts with the finished picture and the floss list (symbol, DMC number, name, stitches and skeins), then the chart, split into pages of 50 × 70 stitches. Every page has row and column numbers and a heavier line every ten stitches, so you never lose your place.
Fewer Colours, Fewer Confetti Stitches
Photos have thousands of colours; a good pattern has a few dozen. Set "Max colours" to choose how many threads you want to use. "Clean up lone single cells" removes confetti, the lone stitches of one colour that are slow to sew and add little to the picture.
How to use Online Cross Stitch Pattern Maker?
- Upload a photo, or drop or paste one. Crop it tightly around the subject first.
- Choose the width in stitches and your fabric count; the finished size is shown below the chart.
- Choose the number of colours, and switch the view to "Chart" to check the symbols.
- Touch up stitches by hand if you like, then download the pattern as a PDF.
Frequently asked questions
What size should my pattern be?
On 14-count Aida, 14 stitches make an inch, so 80 stitches across is about 5.7 inches (14.5 cm). Portraits and detailed photos need 100 to 200 stitches across; simple shapes look good from 40.
How are skeins worked out?
A skein of DMC floss stitched with two strands covers roughly 1,800 full crosses on 14-count, and more on finer fabric. Buy one extra of the colours you use most.
Can I use other thread brands?
The pattern uses DMC numbers, which most other brands publish conversion charts for. DMC is a trademark of its owner, which is not connected with this tool.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The pattern is made in your browser and your photo never leaves your device. For other ways to turn a photo into a craft, try the Paint by Numbers Generator or the Perler Bead Pattern Maker.
